A brief insight into the life of the remarkable James Emman Kwegyir Aggrey shows us how Africans have distinguished themselves in diverse endeavours, the world over. Little wonder, he encourages Africans to be proud of their colour. As a missionary and intellectual in the early 20th century, Aggrey canvassed for harmony between the blacks and whites – just like the white and black keys of the piano.
Like him, there are and have been, Africans who have distinguished themselves in various endeavours of life around the world and still identified with their African heritage and community. These people have turned out to be beacons of inspiration and have instilled a sense of value, honour, and dignity in other Africans around the world. The remarkable Aggrey quoted earlier, and his wife later had hostels, markers, and houses named after them.
The history of Africa is replete with awe-inspiring men and women that have become icons to the younger generation. The 21st century also has its share of inspiring Africans. These people have domineered different areas of life – from entrepreneurs to literary wits and entertainers. Among them are the visionary Elon Musk who would stop at nothing until he has created a settlement for humans on Mars. Tidjane Thiam, Trevor Noah, Aliko Dangote, Koos Bekker, Kumi Naidoo, Tyler Perry and many others are among those that continue to create solidarity with the African community and heritage.
